Following graduation from Storm Lake High School in 2002, Dr. Armstrong attended the University of Iowa on a merit based Dean’s Scholarship. There he majored in biological sciences with a focus on neurosciences and volunteered on the surgical floors of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He received the Collegiate Rhodes Dunlap Scholarship recognizing outstanding academic achievement, was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society, and was 4 times named to the university President’s list by maintaining a grade point average above 4.00 in consecutive semesters. He graduated with highest distinction in 2006.

Dr. Armstrong accepted a position as a researcher in a University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics medical research laboratory and spent 1 year investigating ischemic preconditioning of cardiac, skeletal muscle, and intestinal tissues. He accepted early admission into the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in 2007. During his time in medical school Dr. Armstrong continued to excel academically and continued his research leading to several publications and presentations. He was drawn to surgery and after earning his medical degree in 2011, Dr. Armstrong applied and accepted a residency in surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

During his time as a surgical resident, Dr. Armstrong was elected as his class representative and was nominated by his medical students as University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Resident Educator of the Year. Dr. Armstrong published numerous academic research papers, authored numerous book chapters, and presented his surgical research nationally. Dr Armstrong gained experience operating and caring for patients at the state’s only academic medical center and busy level 1 trauma center. Additionally, Dr. Armstrong spent time rotating in rural surgical settings and began to develop a yearning to apply his experience and skill in the care of patients in Northwest Iowa.

Following completion of his surgical residency in 2017, Dr. Armstrong accepted a position with Buena Vista Regional Medical Center as a partner of Dr. Jason Dierking.

Dr. Armstrong strives to thoughtfully provide the highest level of care for his patients including the latest technologies and treatment options. He continues to seek opportunities to educate and ensures patients are informed and involved in all aspects of their care.
